...Kathryn Novak, the group's Florida coordinator, said the Sunshine State's 1,200 miles of coastline and dozens of endangered or threatened species make it especially vulnerable to litter. "Plastic bags are one of the most common items that we find, and they resemble jellyfish, which is one of the favorite foods of sea turtles," Novak said.

As is so often the case, the world is beginning to see that the future can be found in the past, in this case the reusable fabric bag. Many stores now offer them at low cost. In some places, programs that provide cash rebates or make donations to environmental causes to reward shoppers who bring their own bags have driven down the use of both paper and plastic significantly. Get yourself a nice, sturdy cloth or net bag and take it to the store with you. Or, failing that, grab a handful of already-used plastic bags and take them with you when you shop.
